I finally took my favorite brownie recipe and sourdoughed it! This are super rich, fudgy, and have just a bit of a different twist to them with the added sourdough. If you are looking to make sourdough brownies that can help you utilize some of that starter with, you need to try this recipe!

Why You’ll Love these Sourdough Brownies
I really like these because I literally use two dishes – a pot to mix everything in and a pan to bake. Keeps dishes low (a big plus for me) and it helps keep this recipe simple.
A lot of brownies I have made in the past have been a bit too “cakey” for my husbands liking, so this recipe is perfect because it’s for the fudgey-brownie type. Adding sourdough starter (whether its fed or not) helps give more to the texture while still keeping it more chewy.
Tips for Baking Sourdough Brownies
- If you are tight on time like us, It is totally fine to use butter right from the fridge, counter, or even freezer! Since we melt it in a pot first, it really doesn’t matter here.
- My recipe calls for sugar as the sweetener, but feel free to substitute your favorite sweetener here; maple syrup, coconut sugar, etc.!
- Be sure to coat your baking dish before pouring your batter in. I like to use either butter or olive oil!
- Be sure to not overcook! These brownies continue to cook after you take them out, so take them out JUST before they are 100% finished (but not too early, of course, or they will fall part!)

Ingredients Needed
Sugar – My main sweetener for the recipe – feel free to substitute with your favorite sweetener!
Butter – I know some people who can’t use butter use olive oil. We use Kerry Gold.
Eggs – we use fresh eggs from our laying hens!
Vanilla Extract – I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again; there should never be a limit on vanilla
Flour – we use all purpose but feel free to use whole wheat or even Einkorn
Salt
Baking powder – Keep this in whether you use sourdough starter or not!
Sourdough starter – You can use discard or active. For this batch we used active

How to make Sourdough Brownies
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Then, grease an 8 inch pan with either your butter or oil.
In a large saucepan (this will be what you mix EVERYTHING in) melt, over low heat, your butter. Make sure to do it over low so it doesn’t smoke!

Once melted, remove from heat and add your sugar, eggs, vanilla, cocoa, and mix well.

Once combined, add the sourdough starter and the flour along with the salt and baking powder. Be sure to mix well by hand (which I do using my whisk) or feel free to use a hand mixer.

Bake for about 30 minutes. Remove when they are just about done and allow to cool fully!
